In a heartfelt statement, the Ukrainian tennis player revealed that the ongoing war in her home country had taken a toll on her emotional well-being, leading her to step away from the court last year because she was not in the right mental space.
Svitolina said she endured sleepless nights, doubts and a feeling of gradually losing herself, adding that Monfils stood by her throughout the difficult period as they tried to save their marriage.
However, she explained that she eventually realised she needed to find her way back to herself and could not do so within the marriage.
Describing the decision as the hardest truth she had ever faced, Svitolina praised Monfils for respecting her choice with strength and grace.
She also expressed gratitude for the love they shared and the life they built together, particularly their daughter, Skai, whom she described as their most precious gift.
The tennis star stressed that their separation would not affect their commitment to raising their daughter together.
“Skai will always come first. Our marriage is ending, but our family is not. We will always be her parents, side by side, at every step of her life,” she said.
Svitolina added that neither of them was to blame for the separation, describing it as the story of two people who loved each other deeply but whose relationship was taking a different direction.
She concluded by asking the public to respect their privacy and give them the space they need to heal.
